Description

I love antiques and especially love old pieces like this.  Not only is it an interesting and unusual object, but also it is a piece of social history.  Made circa the mid to late 1800’s, Victorians used to buy these bottles, usually containing “Aerated Water” for their novelty and health benefits. You can just imagine an early Victorian lady walking along Margate or Blackpool esplanade in layers of clothing on a hot summers day enjoying her cool aerated water, whilst fanning herself.

The bottles shape is interesting and was designed so that the bottle would be stored on its side to keep the cork moist and sealed tight.  It also was a benefit for the merchant as it meant that once the bottle was opened, it had to be finished before they could put it down!

This bottle is not embossed with any markings and is plain in appearance; I think this makes this one quite early and possibly mid 1800’s.  The condition is good condition for its age, with a couple of small chips and but no cracks and a fair amount of rubbing to the exterior (probably from being buried for over 150 years!

Torpedo bottles came in differing shapes and sizes and this bottle is large in size and measures approximately 24cm long and is made from a pale green clear thick and heavy glass.

Certainly a talking piece and an interesting artefact that looks great on display and is ideal for the collector!
